The rising cost of living is at the forefront of most people’s minds in the UK. Especially when it comes to energy usage. The recent hike in our energy costs has us all reviewing our daily usage. As expert bathroom designers in Essex we are often asked, what uses more energy, a bath or shower? Many people believe that showers are far more energy efficient than baths. However, this is not necessarily the case.
The Superior Showerer
We all know those who enjoy a shower feel superior over those who bath when it comes to saving the planet. However, this is often based on the misconception that showers don’t last as long as a soak in the tub. But in most cases people have an inaccurate idea of how long they spend in the shower.
It’s Been Proven.
According to the 2011 landmark UK Sustainable Shower Study which reviewed 2600 shower experiences over 10 days by members of 100 families. Using a sensor in the shower to measure the duration of their shower time. Furthermore, each participant was asked to keep a diary of how long they think they were in the shower. Over 50% of participants who claimed to have had a 5-minute shower, in fact took 8 minutes.
Conclusion
The key finding of the study is that showers use up nearly as much energy as having a bath. Therefore, unless you are keeping your shower time under 5 minutes, you may not be saving as much as you think.
So, Soak Away?
Just because showers are not as energy efficient as we like to think, doesn’t mean baths are better. Each one of us has different habits when it comes to bathing. Someone who enjoys long showers, could be using more than someone who enjoys a shallow bath. As such it can be like comparing apples with oranges. However, what we do know is that you can make your bathroom more energy efficient without changing your habits.
